Character
Name: Baralai
Source: FFX-2
Age: 18
Species: human
Requested Department Assignment: (If multiple, in order of preference)
Field Agent and Junior Researcher
Personality:
Baralai tries to always keep himself cool, calm, and collected. He isn’t the type to fly off the handle when things go bad, or even to yell. The silent treatment can work much better than those tactics after all. Certain things can make him truly angry, but those things are few and far between. He forgives rather easily and won't hold a grudge so long as whoever he has a disagreement with is willing to talk it out like rational beings, but if all someone wants to do is yell their way through a 'disagreement' he'd rather say nothing and walk away. He’s hardworking and steadfast, but he knows and acknowledges his own physical limitations. He is also painfully shy when it comes to anything other than work. The social scene just isn't something he has had to deal with much, and that left him unprepared to actually go out and make friends.
History, including how they encountered the Aegis Foundation:
Baralai comes from a small island in French Polynesia. His mother abandoned him when he was still very young and he was never adopted, so as a result he has never had a true family or even a legal last name. He was never that social as a child because he, unlike the other children in the orphanage, could sense spirits. When he was six, a powerful demon possessed him. A local elder who was deeply religious said that it was the work of the devil and sent for a priest. The priest managed to banish the demon and save the boy, but he had been changed forever. His once dark hair had turned white, and remains that color to this day. He had also lost most of his resistance to possession.
The priest, concerned for the boy’s safety, took the child with him and made sure that he would be able to live in the European monastery he called home. The only spirits there were benign, which ensured both Baralai’s safety and the safety of those around him. The monks taught the boy all they could and he was very happy there, but he always wanted to know more. He knew a lot about the spirit world because of what he could see and hear, but he wanted to know how he could protect himself and others from them. He read and memorized any book he could find on the subject, sifting through the mountains of fiction to find true fact. He even branched out into other religions to find the best ways to combat spirits and demons. This was somewhat frowned upon, but allowed given his situation. Taking what he learned and putting it into practice, he set out into the world to continue searching for answers.
When he was still young, he was approached by an organization that specialized in fighting harmful supernatural beings. He agreed to join them, thinking that not only could he further his own personal research but he could at last use what he had studied to help others. Many people found it difficult to work with him, but he finally wound up in a group with another boy his age. He taught his new companion how to use exorcism talismans, and they became an effective team. It was during his time with the agency that Baralai discovered his ability to use magic spells as well. He'd had no idea of knowing that this gift was why he had actually been sought out by the organization to begin with. He also practiced martial arts since he preferred to use a staff instead of a gun.
One unfortunate day, his team was sent on a dangerous mission into the lair of a demon. All who entered were possessed by the spirits of the demon’s victims, Baralai included. However, his young partner managed to keep his own mind and used the talismans to banish the spirits from both Baralai and their commanding officer. They knew better than to try and fight such a strong enemy and retreated. What they didn’t know is that a particularly intelligent and vengeful spirit had taken control of their commander as they left.
When they tried to tell their employers that the mission had been far too dangerous, they were attacked and had to run for their lives. They didn’t know it, but the agency had been engaging in less-than-legal activities and the people in charge were trying to destroy all the evidence. Their team, the only remaining agents left alive, managed to escape. Yet they were not out of danger. As they tried to split up and head their separate ways, the spirit that had been dormant till that moment took control of their commander. He shot Baralai in the back, and his partner in the shoulder. It was a miracle that they survived.
After that, Baralai returned to the monastery he’d grown up in. It was the only safe place he could think of at the time, but he found that staying in one place no longer felt truly safe. He didn't want to give up on his personal mission, despite what had happened, and he certainly didn't want to endanger the monastery if his former commander or the agency managed to track him down. With little other choice, he started traveling. Everywhere he went he sought out religious temples and the like, staying there for a month or so at a time in order to learn what he could before moving on. (This period of time includes a certain incident I shall not go into here during which he learned what it is like to be held captive and treated politely at the same time.) He encountered a few supernatural organizations as well, but kept as far away from them as he could for fear of a repeat of what had happened to him before. That is, until he was contacted by the Aegis Foundation.
Any Special Abilities and Notable Skills:
He has trained in a few forms of martial arts, mainly with a staff, and is good enough with a pistol. His offensive magic is Holy, that being his natural element, and he can use it most effectively by charging a weapon with it. As for healing magic, he can use 'Regen' which heals the target individual slowly over a period of time. Somewhat notable is his study of various religions, as that kind of knowledge can be useful when dealing with certain crazy cults or big bad monstrosities from beyond.
Writing Sample: (Third person please)
Baralai never thought he would be in a place like this again. If anyone had told him a year ago that he would willingly sign up with the Aegis Foundation, he would have called them crazy. Yet, here he was. It was so wrong to work with a group like this again, to not only take the risk of being double-crossed like before but also to risk drawing the attention of any surviving Crimson Squad members. And still, it was so right. This kind of work, even with its dangers, was something he cared a great deal about. Someone had to go out there and protect the world from all those unknown dangers, right? So why not him? He certainly had the right kind of experience for this job.
Besides, as he near-constantly reminded himself, this group was different. Their record was, if not clean, at least impressive. They had done a lot of good and handled a lot of difficult cases. And it certainly didn't hurt that they had somehow managed to not only track down but also enlist his former partner as well. He would never admit it, even to himself, but that fact alone did a great deal to quiet his fears about this new group.
Do you understand that this game is serious, and that horrible and unfair things might happen to your character?
Certainly so and that won't be a problem with him. Non-supernatural ever will actually get to him more than anything, but he's soldiered through enough bad experiences to be able to deal with it and move on.
